Zayed the Founder Day: 7 January becomes an annual national occasion, first celebration in 2027

ByAl Majlis Times staff

UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has designated 7 January of every year as Zayed the Founder Day, a new annual national occasion celebrating the life, legacy and values of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The inaugural celebration will take place on 7 January 2027.

The date was not chosen at random. Written as 7/1, it carries a double meaning: the number seven stands for the seven emirates that came together under one flag, while the two digits together recall 1971, the year the Union was established. The calendar itself thus becomes an annual reminder of the idea of seven emirates and one nation that is so closely tied to the Founder and his approach.

As for how the day will be marked, the announced framework does not confine it to a single date. It is meant to be a platform through which institutions, schools, families and individuals engage with Sheikh Zayed's life through initiatives and programmes that run throughout the year, spanning education, culture, research, content production, community participation and public events. Its timing in the first week of the year is deliberate, coinciding with the return of students and employees after the holidays and the setting of priorities for the year ahead.

Commenting on the announcement, Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Foreign Trade, said the designation reflects deep appreciation for the legacy of Sheikh Zayed, who laid the foundations of the Union and an exceptional development journey. He added that the Founder's vision extended to every area of development, helping to build an open and competitive economy that established the country as a global hub for trade and investment and a trusted partner in the world economy, and that this legacy will remain an inspiration for generations.

So far the announcement gives no indication that the occasion will be a public holiday. It has been presented as an annual national occasion, similar to other national days the country marks without a day off, such as Flag Day.

Al Majlis Analysis: The significance of Zayed the Founder Day is that it moves the remembrance of the Founder from the realm of sentiment into regular institutional work. Instead of the legacy being tied to scattered occasions, it now has a fixed date on which new priorities and projects can be launched every year. The day adds a new entry to a national calendar that already includes Union Day on 2 December, Commemoration Day and Flag Day, but it stands out by focusing on the Founder himself and his values as a living reference for generations who never knew him. Linking the occasion to education, research and content also means its real impact will be measured by what schools and institutions deliver, not by the size of a single day's celebration. With roughly ten weeks to go before the first edition, the practical details will be the first test of this vision.
