Kuwait summons Iranian ambassador over “blatant interference”

ByAl Majlis Times staff

Kuwait's foreign ministry summoned Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Totonchi and handed him a protest note over a statement by his embassy that Kuwait described as “blatant interference” in its internal affairs and an affront to its sovereignty and the independence of its judiciary.

Deputy Foreign Minister Hamad Suleiman Al-Mishaan delivered the note, stressing Kuwait's strong rejection and condemnation of any interference in rulings issued by its national courts, in reference to the embassy statement issued on 28 October.

Al-Mishaan said Iran must abide by international law and the UN Charter, particularly the principles of good neighbourliness and non-interference in states' internal affairs, as well as the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The protest comes amid wider regional tension linked to the war on Iran, and Gulf states' insistence on respect for their sovereignty and non-interference in their internal affairs.
