Flávio Bolsonaro leaves for the US after election defeat

US media reported that Flávio Bolsonaro left Brazil for the United States on Tuesday after refusing to accept his election loss to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro and a senator, ran for president as the right's candidate against President Lula da Silva.

His refusal to concede recalls the tensions after the 2022 election, when his father's supporters rejected the result and stormed government buildings in Brasília in January 2023.

The developments are a fresh test for the democratic institutions of Brazil, Latin America's largest country by population and economy.
