First Class Order of Zayed II for flydubai crew: a presidential honour for courage that kept passengers safe

ByAl Majlis Times staff

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, conferred the First Class Order of Zayed II on the crew members of flydubai flight FZ1073, in recognition of their courageous efforts to ensure the safety of passengers during the in-flight incident last September. The honour comes weeks after the incident, which ended with the aircraft landing safely, and gives the crew one of the highest decorations in the country.

The order was presented on behalf of the President by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of flydubai. The honour covered the crew members involved in the flight, led by the captain, as a collective tribute to a team that acted responsibly at a difficult moment.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum said the airline was deeply honoured by the recognition, adding that the bravery of its colleagues reflects values shared by everyone who works at the carrier, and that the UAE is a home where hundreds of nationalities work side by side. His words reflect the make-up of aviation crews in the country, which bring together staff from many backgrounds and nationalities who share one standard: the safety of the traveller.

The honour carries a meaning beyond the incident itself. It places passenger safety at the very top of the national aviation sector's priorities and makes clear that those who carry that responsibility in the air are recognised by the leadership at the highest level. The official statement on the honour did not include further details of what happened during the incident, focusing instead on the crew's performance and their care to protect everyone on board until the aircraft landed safely.

Al Majlis Analysis: Choosing the First Class Order of Zayed II, and having it presented by the Crown Prince of Dubai in the presence of the airline's chairman, gives the story clear national weight. The message is not about one airline; it is about an aviation system that is one of the pillars of the UAE economy and of its image around the world. The official statement's focus on passenger safety rather than on the details of the incident reflects a responsible approach that sets out confirmed facts and leaves the rest to the competent authorities. Honouring the crew as a team, with its many nationalities, also fits the image of the UAE as a country that values competence and courage regardless of origin, an image that strengthens travellers' confidence in national carriers at a time of rapid growth in the sector.
