8 million children in Sudan are out of school

ByAl Majlis Times staff

A survey by CARE International found that 8 million children in Sudan have lost the chance to go to school, and that more than 90% of the country's schools face severe water shortages.

Since April 2023 Sudan has been gripped by war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, causing one of the world's largest displacement crises and severe damage to infrastructure, including schools.

Humanitarian workers warn that prolonged disruption to education threatens a whole generation and leaves children more exposed to child labour, recruitment and early marriage.

Water shortages in schools also have health implications, contributing to the spread of disease and limiting schools' ability to take in pupils.
