Iran weighs new mediation draft to end war with seven-day timetable

Iran is studying a new draft agreement presented by Qatari mediators to end the war with the United States and Israel, including a seven-day timetable of reciprocal confidence-building steps, according to an official familiar with the talks.

The official said the draft was handed to Tehran last Sunday and a response is expected by the end of the week. It sets out daily steps for Iran and the US, with implementation possibly starting early next week under guarantees from several countries. The nature of the steps, the guarantor states and any obligations on Israel were not specified. The seven days refer to the implementation schedule, not to ending the war within a week.

Qatar and Pakistan are leading mediation between Washington and Tehran. Doha said on Tuesday that success requires Iran to show good faith, calling on it to stop threatening Arab Gulf states and to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Senior Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani officials also met Iranian officials in Tehran on Monday.

The draft follows the collapse of a temporary deal reached through mediation in June and renewed US threats to strike Iran, while the war since February has disrupted shipping and oil supplies in the region.
