Al Ahly reached the group stage after beating Uganda's Kitara 6-1 on aggregate in the second preliminary round.

Group B features another Arab clash between Morocco's AS FAR and Libya's Al Ahli Tripoli, with Tanzania's Azam United and South Africa's Durban City. Group C has DR Congo's Maniema Union, Tanzania's Singida Black Stars, Zambia's Red Arrows and the qualifier from ties involving Algeria's CR Belouizdad, Mauritania's ASC Douane and Guinea's Hafia. Group D brings together Algeria's USM Alger, Tunisia's CS Sfaxien, Mozambique's Black Bulls and Mali's Real Bamako.
