2026 UN Water Conference: UAE Foreign Ministry briefs 180 diplomatic representatives in Abu Dhabi

ByAl Majlis Times staff

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held its second diplomatic briefing on the 2026 UN Water Conference at the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy in Abu Dhabi, attended by 180 ambassadors, deputy heads of mission and representatives of international organisations, and called for broad international participation in the conference the UAE co-hosts with Senegal from 8 to 10 December.

The briefing was led by H.E. Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, who updated the missions on preparations, the programme, participation arrangements and logistics. He said water security is "fundamental to national security" and economic prosperity, and that the conference must be "a turning point" towards commitments to act and to mobilise investment. It follows the first briefing, held on 14 May 2026 with more than 150 representatives.

It will be only the third UN Water Conference in 50 years and the first dedicated to accelerating Sustainable Development Goal 6 on water and sanitation. The programme runs over three themed days: 'Water for Shared Prosperity' on 8 December, 'Investments for Lives & Livelihood' on 9 December and 'Resilient Future Together' on 10 December.

The Blue Zone will host six interactive dialogues adopted by consensus at the UN General Assembly, including the first dialogue in the history of UN water conferences devoted entirely to investment and financing. Alongside it the UAE will host the Oasis, a space open to all with pavilions for countries, companies and organisations and a programme of side events. The conference will be held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).

Al Majlis Analysis: The rise in attendance from more than 150 representatives at the first briefing to 180 at the second is a practical sign of growing international interest about five weeks before the conference opens. What stands out is that Abu Dhabi is not limiting itself to logistics; it is pushing for a conference measured by results, with the first dialogue ever devoted entirely to water investment and an open space that brings governments together with investors, innovators and young people. This fits the UAE's diplomatic approach of turning hosting into a platform for commitments, and of linking water to development, the economy and stability rather than settling for closing statements that change little on the ground.
